Newsletter #016 – What’s the Problem

People spend money when they have a problem that needs solving.

The basics in life are needing a roof over your head, food on the table and clothing. Paying a mortgage or rent solves the problem of a roof over their head. Grocery shopping solves the problem of needing food to survive etc.

Money is the way to buy whatever is needed to solve a problem.

When writing sales copy, the writer needs to identify the problem potential customers have, show they understand the problem and the transition they experienced when using the product or service.

The more problems you can solve the more sales you make.

Solve a Problem

Your customers have problems that need solving but how do you find the problems?

Social Media is a fantastic resource for finding out what problems people have and then coming up with solutions.

People love to moan on social media. This is fantastic for you because you can now see all their problems, learn the language they are speaking, and write your sales copy using their terminology. You can show how your product can solve their problem

This approach makes it appear that your sales copy is aimed directly at them.

Don’t hound them in groups or sell direct but be discreet. Advertising direct into groups will normally get you booted out of a group, but you can make positive comments on posts and showcase your knowledge. People will look you up and send friend requests.

Use Social Media for your research about potential customers and their problems.

Social Media One Big Sales Copy Platform

In previous newsletters, I explained the type of content used on each platform. So now you can post the right content/sales copy to each platform to attract the best customers.

Facebook – is personal so you show the transition results from using your product. This is your bragging platform. I used this product and I got this result. Use your profile to showcase your results.

Instagram – requires more background information about the product, here you focus on the problem it solves.

YouTube – is the how-to, here you show customers how to use your product or service and the results they’ll get if they get the product from you.

Twitter – is breaking news, this is the headline of your sales copy

Podcasts – is for interviews, great way to showcase people getting results from your product. If you have testimonials ask if they would be interested in being on your podcast.

Think of Social Media as just one big sales copy machine split into different platforms. When you write the different components of good sales copy, you already have the extracts necessary for each social media platform.

This Week’s Action Step

Research the problems people have and the language they use to describe the problem.

Review your blogs. Are you drawing attention to the right problems and are you using the right terminology?

Edit or rewrite blogs as necessary.
