In newsletter #005, we talked about social media marketing and how each platform has a specific type of audience. We looked at Facebook covering how to use your personal timeline, pages and groups. Facebook is about the transition. In other words the results you can expect if you use this product or service.
Instagram is slightly different in that it is more about the behind-the-scenes of your product or service.
Before we delve into Instagram, I confess, I’m not a big user of Instagram as it is not where I find my customers. They come mainly from Facebook and Twitter. This is why it is so important to understand who your customer is, what they want and where to find them.

What is Instagram?
As social media started growing, most people were on Facebook. Youngsters loved the site to be able to keep in contact with their friends and post about their exploits.
Slowly parents and grandparents moved onto Facebook and this saw a big exodus of the younger generation, who wanted to keep what they do private from their parents and they started moving onto Instagram. The younger generation are now parents themselves. However, they have grown up with the platform and the changes and tend to remain with the platform.
This natural evolution of Instagram has provided a broader audience graphic that marketers and advertisers now target.
Instagram is a photo and short video (reels) platform. It is a visual platform.
How to Target Your Perfect Customer on Instagram
While Instagram started as a photo-sharing app it has evolved to include short videos and tv. This has attracted businesses keen to advertise and get in front of a growing audience. It has brought in high-cost advertisers who are willing to spend thousands and millions to get prime advertising slots.
For most small businesses, this is way outside their budget so they tend to have to go back to the old-fashioned way of growing an audience on a social media platform. By providing content.
The audience on Instagram tends to be a bit more skeptical than Facebook. To grow an audience and make advertising work for you, the type of content needs to be different to that used on Facebook.
Followers on Instagram want a bit more behind-the-scenes and indepth information about products and services.
An example.
For my course Zero to Millionaire, Building the Foundation on Facebook, I show pictures about lifestyle and transformation. Building wealth and having more money. On Instagram, there is more information about the actual product. Looking at different aspects of the course and what is covered.
So, I treat each module as a separate product providing information about the topic being covered and creating the “wow” factor rather than the “how to”.
Hashtags are essential and can be added to the text to attract more perfect clients to your site.
The most successful people I see on Instagram have a combination of pictures, reels and stories to attract their audience.
Get Creative
As a visual platform, Instagram is perfect for being creative either through graphic design, using platforms like Canva or even through videos and reels.
The more creative you are the more you can attract people to your platform.
As long as you are producing content for the skeptical person who wants more behind-the-scenes content, Instagram should be the perfect platform to include as part of your Social Marketing strategy.
Action
Create an Instagram account or modify your existing Instagram account to become your business page.
Create some images and/or mini videos and start posting to your account.
