Newsletter #045

They are a Pain, Do We Still Need Them

My email box gets clogged up every day with unwarranted emails to the extent that I often lose the ones I want to see.  When I say clogged up there can be around 400 emails a day going into my inbox.

Most of these are unwarranted sales pitches where I’ve signed up for something and the email list is then used by people, whom I have no idea who they are or even if I want their product.

They are instantly deleted.  Unfortunately, by the time that is sorted having time to read the remaining ones gets put on the “later” backburner to never see daylight again.

So, it was really interesting in one of my FB groups where emails was the topic of the week with people talking about their strategies and should they do this or that.

This week’s newsletter is taking a look from my perspective about email marketing.

Is Email Marketing Still Effective?

The answer is a resounding yes.  Despite my hate of them, most Online Entrepreneurs make more in sales from their email list than from any other source.

Data shows that especially for Affiliate Marketers, 90% of sales come from their email list.

With an email list you are talking to and selling to a crowd of people particularly interested in your topic rather than trying to find a needle in a haystack to sell to.

Email marketing should be a part of every Online Entrepreneurs toolkit.

Are you using your email list effectively?

How Often Should You Send Emails?

This is a dilemma many Online Entrepreneurs struggle with.  What is too much or too little?

That comes down to your marketing.

The Online Entrepreneur Newsletter was advertised as a weekly newsletter.  You subscribed with the expectation of receiving a weekly newsletter.

However, my membership coaching clients prefer less contact.  They see me enough during the week they don’t need a weekly email as well so an email sent out once a month is enough for them.

I often sign up for books.  The advertising will be showing something I want to learn more about and with my love of books, I’ll buy the book.  You know the adverts that say Free Book just pay for shipping.

What I find frustrating is once I’ve signed up, the emails start often on a daily basis and the book hasn’t arrived yet.  I often find myself unsubscribing from the list.  Surely, it would be better to wait until the book arrives and then send emails.

When sending emails, it comes down to what is the expectation of the client and what were you marketing.

How Do You Create an Email That Sells?

A very interesting question and one which a few years ago I would have been asking myself.

I was using a strategy of sending 3 emails with a CTA (call to action) in the 3rd email.  It was working quite well especially with a particular lead magnet where 1 in 10 people signed up.

Two years ago, I signed up for a marketing/sales course that ran for the whole 12 months with weekly training sessions. There were several around email marketing with the trainer advising to send one email with several call to actions in the email.  Repeat this with every email.

When I tried this the open rate on emails and conversion to a sale dropped drastically.

Last year, I decided to try a new strategy of providing content to the client – like this newsletter – with a short call to action at the end of each email.  The result an increase in open rate and an increase in sales.

No salesy email – simply content-driven with one sales pitch.

My results have shown me that I don’t need to create sales emails as the content will make the sale.

Should Emails Still Be a Part of Your Online Strategy?

Yes!

This Week’s Action Step

If you aren’t sending emails to your email list then now is the time to start, just don’t over do it.

What items can you sell through your email list?

Look at the data for open rates and click throughs.  How can you improve them?

Don’t be afraid to experiment.
