Newsletter #031 – Viral Versus SEO

SEO content has been a hot topic for years with many claiming it does or doesn’t work while other prefer to work on viral content as the way to get better rankings and views to their website.

In this week’s newsletter we take a look at a recent study I found with a comparison about using SEO vs Viral Marketing. The information was compiled by Ahref which is a keyword search platform.

Viral Marketing

Viral marketing is releasing content to draw a lot of traffic to your website immediately to generate sales.

Different types of viral marketing can include social media posts/videos with a link to your website.

Statistics from Ahref indicate that this type of marketing has a big impact immediately but also drops off very quickly so data on traffic to your website would look like a mountain peak

The chart below is for demonstration purposes only and is not actual data.

Viral Marketing (blue line) requires lots of continuous posting of content and videos to keep the visitors coming to the site.

SEO Marketing

SEO is about finding the type of keyword searches that prospective clients are most likely to be searching and including them in your content while answering some of the most likely types of questions that searchers are asking.

The result of SEO is that content is slow to get visitors as you are dependent on Google or other search engines promoting your site. It tends to take around 3 – 6 months before your website is promoted through search engines.

The result is that SEO takes time to get going but over time will grow and grow as your website becomes more recognized as an authority site.

Comparison

It is a personal choice as to which you prefer to use viral or SEO marketing.

For me, I use the strategy of viral (social media) marketing when launching a new website but build the content around SEO so that over time the organic growth comes naturally through search engines rather than continuous marketing on social media.

Results

On the 1st of October 2023, I launched a new website The Online Entrepreneur because I was starting a new coaching course and wanted to give clients live-time results during the course.

Initially, I used viral marketing announcing to my email list and social media platforms.

All content has been geared towards SEO marketing. So, I have been creating content for the site continuously.

The results are that it is now week 12 as I’m writing this newsletter and the results are

I have created 37 posts and 13 pages of content.

Unique visitors have dropped and stabilized at 20 per week as I rarely promote on social media and rely mainly on SEO.

Impressions which are the number of times my content is put in front of prospective visitors is up 60% to 149 per week. The better the content I add to the website the more people tend to stay on the site.

The average time people stay on the website is 1 minute 48 seconds. This means they are reading the content. This is what Google and other search engines like to see. So, they are more likely to promote my content to searchers.

Organic traffic to the website is 15%

The location that traffic comes from is Germany 40%, the UK 20%, US 20%, Spain 10% other countries 10% so I’m getting diversity of traffic to the website.

Click-throughs on one of my affiliate products is 5%. There is no tracking data available yet on other products.

Overall, for the first 3 months, SEO has started to have good effect and the website is growing steadily.
