Online Entrepreneur Newsletter #044

End of an Era

With the 1st of April fast approaching, Meta has signalled the end of 3rd party access to its platform.

So, what does that mean for you?

3rd Party Access

3rd party access is where apps and other software programs are given access to post information to your timeline.  The apps/programs use API keys to access Facebook, Instagram etc.  These keys are no longer going to be made available to the programs.

For instance, do you write posts on a scheduling app?  If you answered yes, then you will be affected by this change.

The timing of the 1st of April might seem like some kind of April Fools joke but if it is, the joke started way back at the end of 2023 when Meta made the announcement to software developers that access was being revoked.  It has caused a huge backlash, especially from app and software developers who have been very vocal about the loss of trade for them.  I think you can assume, this is no April Fool’s Joke.

What can you do about this?

In last week’s newsletter, I mentioned some of the things I do to manage my time.  Scheduling is one of the tools.  But I don’t use scheduling apps instead I prefer to use the scheduler available with many social media platforms, WordPress websites, etc.

Here’s a look at the ones I use

  • Meta Business Suite – Facebook and Instagram’s very own business suite of tools. (They want you to use this instead of 3rd party programs) This has a scheduler that allows me to post blogs months in advance to my Facebook Page, up to 3 Facebook Groups and Instagram along with posts to stories.  There is a facility to share the same post to both FB and Instagram or customize separate posts for Facebook or Instagram.
  • Social Media Platforms – Some of the other platforms I use are X (formerly twitter); Pinterest and LinkedIn.  They also have scheduling facilities for posts and blogs.
  • Blogging Platforms – I have some old blogging sites on WordPress and Blogger again they have schedulers built in.
  • WordPress Website – Posts can be scheduled for release on your website and are a great way of writing a bundle of posts in advance and setting them up for release over the month.
  • Course hosting platform for Karen Newton International (https://courses.karennewtoninternational.com) I have a blogging page on this website again it has a scheduler included.
  • YouTube – has a scheduler for releasing content on your channel.  Did you know you can now have different types of content not just videos but blogs and podcasts?  Each has a scheduler included.
  • Email manager – this newsletter is sent out each week through an email management provider, I use Aweber.  It also has a scheduler included so I can allocate certain times for this newsletter and other ones to be sent.

Most platforms offer scheduling as part of their product but few realize they can schedule the release of content on these platforms.

Putting This Into Practice

When I create content, such as this newsletter, it can be repurposed for many uses including blogs and social media posts.

The newsletter is generally the first thing created.  From there I repurpose the content to go out on social media and websites.

However, don’t saturate the internet with one piece of content at once. It doesn’t look good, instead So, scheduled the content for release over the coming weeks on different platforms.

If you take a look at my websites and blog sites, you find variations about this topic (Scheduling) on them.  Social Media posts are the same, with each post modified slightly and scheduled for release during the month.

I even rework the content into a chapter of a book.  Ever wondered how I’m able to publish so many books, I repurpose content each week when creating newsletters and writing blogs. I have several books on the go at once.

Four simple steps make this work

  1. Create a Content Master File
  2. Cut and Paste onto the different platforms
  3. Edit the content so no two posts are the same.  This avoids plagiarism software highlighting the post
  4. Schedule the release date

Now you have your own system for creating and posting content

It Takes Time to Get Into the Habit of Scheduling

If you have been using a 3rd party app for your blogs and posts they will stop working eventually.  Unless Meta has a change of heart.  The best time to start work on scheduling your own posts and blogs is now.

It takes time to get into the habit of posting and scheduling on all your platforms.  But, it is worth the effort to take control of your workplace, create a lasting habit and save money by not paying for costly software.

I use Microsoft Word to create this newsletter.  It becomes the Content Master File.  I then save copies for blogs and social media posts.  This way I always have content that can be repurposed in about 12 months when most people with short memories (90% of the population) won’t realize you are putting out similar posts to last year.

Get into the habit of creating content and reworking it, scheduling it and you’ll improve your online profile and profits.

This Week’s Action Step

Learn how to schedule content on your social media platforms.  They are simple and don’t need any extra work except for Meta Business Suite which will require you to setup the account and link your Facebook Page, Facebook Groups and Instagram account.

Schedule your first post to go out next week on each social media platform.

Get into the habit of setting a specific time aside each week for content creation on Social Media and your Website.
