Online Business Opportunities In A Recession
Recessions are difficult for everyone. They bring about uncertainty with many families and businesses struggling.
But when there are difficult times there are also opportunities.
Best Time to Start an Online Business
The best time to start an online business is now. That might seem counterintuitive to most thinking but any business will take time to learn the necessary skills to get it started and put in the essential systems for the business to grow.
I have worked in the online industry since 2003 yet there are always new things to learn, new systems and new technology. It is an ever evolving industry.
When I started The Online Entrepreneur website, it started as a newsletter, I had to learn how to create newsletters that people wanted to read and deliver them to subscribers.
Social Media Marketing and Email Marketing were 2 of the skills that needed updating.
When I decided to create The Online Entrepreneur website I had to update my skills on WordPress; Plugins: EEAT for creating and ranking content and a whole more.
So, the best time to start an Online Business is now so you put into practice all the learning.
What If, I’ve Lost My Job and Don’t Have Any Money
There are many ways to start a business with no money.
Starting an online business during a recession may require a different approach compared to more stable times. Scrutinizing expenses, focusing on value-driven services, and agile methodologies become more crucial than ever. By offering solutions to problems exacerbated by the recession, such as cost-effective services or products, you could tap into new markets eager for these alternatives.
What are some of the things you can do to start an online business for free.
Well surprisingly, the same way as websites are monetized can be applied to Social Media, this includes advertising, affiliate marketing, memberships, consulting and coaching. If you think for a moment, I’m sure you’ll find other ways too.
All of the above can be started through Social Media,
When I started Karen Newton International it was run purely through Facebook using Facebook Page, Facebook Groups and Private Groups.
Only as the business grew and I wanted to scale it so other tools and resources were added to the business.
Other platforms that can be used to build businesses include almost any social media platform, YouTube, TikTok, eBay, Etsy, Pintrest the list goes on and just comes down to your imagination.
If you have lost your job, or want to start a business around a website, then social media, or e-commerce platforms are a great way to start with no money.
History Shows Us the Future Opportunities
History repeats.
Take the 20th century. Everything that happened in the 1900s is happening again in 2000.
We’ve already seen war, recession, pandemic, boom times, high inflation and are now back in another recession with another war looming.
What we can learn from this repetition is,
- What people did to survive difficult times
- Where the opportunities lie
- How people from the past made their money and copy it
- How we can be ready to take advantage of the next phase in the economic cycle
Brands that are household names today used the recession as a catalyst to restructure, refine their offerings, or enter new market.
During the 2008 credit crunch and the subsequent recession the growth industry was network marketing.
As people lost their jobs they saw network marketing as the perfect opportunity to start a business with support and start earning quickly.
In this recession, different industries are more favoured. The online industry has grown significantly creating opportunities for most people to start small but scaleable businesses.
When understanding what happened in the past it is easier to identify the opportunities and be ready when they occur.
Recurring Revenue: The Key to Financial Stability Online
Economic instability often brings a wave of uncertainty, but one solid strategy to maintain a level of financial security is to focus on building streams of monthly recurring revenue, or MRR.
This model is particularly effective for online businesses as it provides a predictable cash flow that can weather ups and downs.
While I have products and services that are sold as one-off the bulk of my business model is MRR. This ensures there is continually a source of recurring revenue hitting my bank account every month.
To take advantage of MRR, I run a couple of memberships that provide everything from starting an online business to more advanced strategic investing membership.
- Members Only – a low cost membership teaching members how to build online businesses.
- KNI Mastermind – a higher-level membership that teaches strategic investing
Memberships are a good way of building a client base, working with clients, client retention and helps to manage your time for your business.
Be a Video Star
Mobile phones have opened of world of opportunity to the would be video star through platforms YouTube.
Mr Beast has a YouTube channel that generates $54 million per year.
He has spent many years learning the art of YouTube videos and crafting his skills.
Yet, some people have a huge following and they simply react to something created by someone else. These include music videos, movies even books.
YouTube offers anyone the opportunity to build an online business for free. Imagination grows the platform.
But like any online business, there sooner the business is started the better as time is a big factor for driving traffic.
