The Value of Quality Content

As Google spends the month of March clearing away spammy content and the less valuable AI-created content it’s time to take a good look at your website to ensure it is providing the type of quality content Google is looking for on a website.

Google Updates

One thing Google is good at is moving the goalposts frequently.

No sooner do you have your head around one update and they are moving on to the next.

March is the month they’ve decided to take a look at search engine rankings and remove content that they deem not of good quality for the user experience.

This involves removing content that is seen as not providing value to visitors – for instance – the old scenario of creating a sales page and leaving it there forever and a day expecting it to rank high and generate sales is long gone.

Today, Google is looking for content that provides information to the visitor.  Ideally, your website should be the last one they visit.  Topic clusters are one of the most successful strategies for building authority and keeping your website consistently ranking high.

One of my clients a couple of months ago asked a question about how he could get his site to number 1 in the rankings.  When he checked the search engine the website at the top was nothing to do with his topic and purely one page of advertising.

This is the type of content Google is trying to remove from their SERPs (Search Engine Results Page)

Be Above Average

Recently Google announced the average number of pages on a website is 6.9  If you aim for 10 or more pages this will put you in the above-average category and certainly help with the ranking of your website.

If you are stuck on ideas for increasing the number of pages on your website then think of policies.

My websites average 17 pages of policies to comply with the legal requirements for websites.  Policies such as GDPR Privacy and Cookie Policy, US Privacy and Cookie Policies, FTC fair trade practices, CPRA a policy specific to California, Affiliate Disclaimers and there are many more.  As I said, there are 17 pages on my websites.

We live in a global economy where you have no idea who will be viewing your website.  Do you have the right policies to comply with legal requirements?

Quality Content

In its endeavour to ensure good user experience, Google’s algorithms are constantly looking at websites, ranking content and creating overall rankings for the website.

To achieve good rankings, you need good content.  Look back at last weeks newsletter where we talked about the different type of content you can add to your website.  This content is favoured by Google and will help your rankings.

This Week’s Action Step

Review your website.

  1. Do you have sufficient pages on your website to be above average?
  2. Do you have plenty of informative posts on your site?
  3. Does your website meet legal requirements?

Karen Newton Website

My website https://karennewton.co.uk is undergoing a revamp.  Recently, it was moved from the Elementor theme to a new one due to the difficulties and limitations with Elementor.

Things have not gone as smoothly as hoped and during the transfer only 18 blogs out of 64 on the site transferred over. Luckily, there were backups of the content and they are gradually being added to the website although it is manual so taking longer than hoped.
